In the seventies, National Airlines had an advertisement campaign with slogans like ‘I’m Laura/Jo/Cheryl. Fly me”.Exactly such an advert was seen by Graham Gouldman, with beneath it a tramp, looking at the advert. Gouldman got an idea from it, wrote it down and worked on it with Eric Stewart, who had some music. However, the result wasn’t good and they almost had thrown away the song, as Kevin Godley came in and brought in some ideas, for examples the guitar solos. After that, the song was good to be recorded and so they did: they released it in 1976 and it came in the charts, number 60 in the US and number 6 in the UK. Enjoy
